On Jan. 13, senior longstick midfielder John Cunningham watched the live stream of the 2012 Major League Lacrosse draft on his computer. After seeing two of his classmates — senior defender Chad Wiedmaier and senior goalie Tyler Fiorito — get chosen as the seventh and 10th picks, respectively, he stopped paying attention. It wasn’t until he began receiving text messages from friends that he realized the Denver Outlaws had chosen him as the 46th pick in the draft.

Men's Lacrosse: Star seniors lead defense into Ivy showdown

On Saturday evening, the men’s lacrosse team will host Cornell in the biggest game of the Ivy League season. With a win, the Tigers (9-3 overall, 5-0 Ivy League) would earn the right to host the conference tournament and complete a perfect Ivy League season; with a loss, they would share the conference title with Cornell (9-2, 4-1) and travel to Ithaca, N.Y., for the Ivy League playoff.

The Savior: Tyler Fiorito

As Princeton fans have watched the mixed fortunes of the men’s lacrosse program over the past four years, one constant that has stood through the folds has been senior goalie Tyler Fiorito. A three-time All-Ivy selection and a two-time All-America, Fiorito is in the middle of possibly his best season yet, ranking second in Division I with a .622 save rate and third with a 6.44 goals against average.

The Lock: Chad Wiedmaier

Six games into his sophomore season on the men’s lacrosse team, senior defenseman Chad Wiedmaier was still waiting for his first action of the year. He had been sidelined because of a knee surgery since the offseason and would only be able to play in the regular season’s final seven games. But the defenseman quickly made up for lost time, racking up 12 caused turnovers — the third highest on the team that year — and earning his second straight first-team All-Ivy selection despite missing the first half of the season.

Baseball: Title series appearance within grasp

The baseball team is in a fight for its playoff life. With only four games left to go in the regular season, the Tigers are looking to return to the Ivy League Championship Series, but they will have to get through some stiff competition first. At 10-6 in the Ivy League, Princeton ranks second in the division, three games behind Cornell and a game above Columbia. In order for Princeton to reach the postseason, it will have to come up big against the Big Red in a four-game series this weekend.

The win capped a furious comeback into the top half of the standings and a spot in the postseason, but Princeton's biggest challenge awaits Thursday night, when the Tigers (13-9 overall, 7-7 EIVA) will face top-seeded Penn State (21-5, 14-0).

The Tigers’ postseason fate rested on the outcome of the final week’s Ivy League games, with five teams still in the running for the top four spots in the conference. Failing to earn a victory Wednesday night against No. 10 Penn (8-5 overall, 6-1 Ivy League), the No. 17 Princeton women’s lacrosse team (7-7, 4-3) failed to advance to the Ivy League tournament, which it won last year. The 13-8 defeat came in the Tigers' final conference game this season, but they will have a chance to earn a final win in their last regular season game Saturday at Penn State.

The softball team dropped its last non-conference game of the season on Tuesday afternoon, falling 9-0 at Hofstra in five innings. Princeton (14-28 overall, 8-8 Ivy League) surrendered eight runs in the first frame and managed only one hit against the Pride (29-13).

Before freshman fall, junior Heidi Robbins had never raced on the water. Almost three years later, Robbins has risen to the top of the women’s openweight crew with a spot on the first varsity boat. The team ranks seventh in the nation and is fresh off of its third straight perfect Ivy League season after beating No. 19 Dartmouth and Penn on the Schuykill River. Women's Water Polo: Princeton looks to extend strong season at Eastern Championships

After winning its seventh Southern Division title a few weekends ago, the women’s water polo team (25-4 overall, 5-0 Southern Division) looks to continue its successful play in the CWPA Eastern Championships tournament this weekend. By winning Southerns, the team guaranteed itself one of the top two seeds in the tournament. Michigan’s win gave it the first seed, pushing the Tigers down to the second spot.

Column: Miami Heat schadenfreude extends beyond LeBron

The NBA Playoffs affords fans another opportunity to watch the Heat struggle. For some, the Heat are no longer the team to root against: “The Decision” was bad, but perhaps not worthy of more than one year of scorn. To some degree, I sympathize with this perspective. LeBron James is hardly worthy of perpetual hatred. But the Heat don’t have just one annoying, whiny player. The entire franchise is annoying and worth rooting against. During this year’s NBA playoffs, feel free to enjoy the Heat’s defeats.

Ultimate Frisbee: Clockwork qualifies for nationals

The women’s club ultimate frisbee team, Lady Clockwork, recently qualified for the Division III national tournament in Appleton, Wis., the weekend of May 19–20. The team is currently 27-9 in its spring season and has won 10 straight matches, the last six of which were played at Metro East Regionals, the tournament that allowed the team to qualify for the national tournament.

Softball: Strong pitching yields split with Columbia

With Penn taking three of four games from Cornell, last weekend was the softball team’s chance to make up some ground in the Ivy League South Division standings. However, after splitting its four-game series with Columbia, Princeton’s chance of coming away with the title remains slim as the team sits three games behind the leaders Penn and Cornell with only four more conference games left to play.

Both women's crews won their respective races this weekend, while only the lightweight rowers won on the men's side. The women's lightweight team retained the Class of 2006 Cup, beating Georgetown in its home opener. Track & Field: Stilin keeps pace in ‘stacked’ 5k field, sets Princeton record

Toeing the line of the elite invitational 5000-meter run at the Mt. SAC Relays in California, senior Joe Stilin found himself a long way from the Ivy League. Racing against one of the most competitive fields he had ever seen, Stilin had two choices before him: run the race of his life, or get dropped like a sack of bricks.“I don’t even really remember the last three or four laps, I was just in oxygen debt pretty bad,” Stilin said. “I looked at the clock with 600 to go and saw what I needed to run to get the school record, and I just focused from there."

With a 12-5 victory, Princeton (9-3 overall, 5-0 Ivy League) remained undefeated in conference play and, thanks to a surprising result at Cornell, earned a share of the Ivy League regular-season title.
