Football: Penn hands Princeton 2nd Ivy loss

The football team's game against Penn could mostly be summarized in one word: mistakes. After going on their first four-game win streak since 2006 earlier this season, the Tigers (4-4 overall, 3-2 Ivy League) have started showing hints of the group that went 1-9 in each of the last two seasons. With a 28-21 loss to the Quakers today, Princeton lost control of its own chances for the Ivy League title.

Cross Country: Bendtsen leads men to 3rd straight title

At last Saturday’s Ivy League cross country championships, the Princeton men had something to prove. The Tigers were two-time defending champions, but this year they were not the favorites. No. 10 Columbia was the team to beat, and many picked the fit and fast Lions to decisively hand the Tigers only their second loss in seven years. But when the gun went off for the 8K championship race at West Windsor Fields, it was all business for the Tigers, and they did not lose on their home course. Dominating the race from the start, the men had their best day of the season, as they easily ran away with the conference crown.

Football: Princeton falls on the road to Cornell, 37-35

The football team saw its hopes for an undefeated season of Ivy League play come to an end on Saturday after a 37-35 shootout loss at Cornell. The Tigers appeared a lot more like the team that started the season off 0-2 rather than the team that had won its past four games, as they played well but fell just short of what they had to do to win. The loss dropped Princeton to 3-1 in the Ivy League and made achieving lone possession of the Ivy League title very unlikely. Star Big Red quarterback Jeff Mathews, who leads the league in passing yardage, had 525 yards through the air on the day while leading Cornell to the close victory.

Cross Country: Competitive Heps features nationally ranked Ivy League teams

Drenching sleet and snow, ankle-deep slush, subfreezing temperatures and gusting winds made the 2011 Heptagonal Cross Country Championships one of the most challenging races in Ivy League history. This year’s weather promises to be more forgiving, forecasting a dry Saturday with a temperature in the upper 60s. Nevertheless, the battle for the team title will be fiercer and more charged than the league has seen in recent years.

Men's Hockey: Fully healthy, men look to bounce back

For the men’s hockey team, its chance to regain dominance on the ice after an exasperating 2011-12 crusade that ended 9-16-7 hinges on the Tigers’ greater familiarity with one another and their health. The reformed Princeton will have its first regular-season test this weekend against Brown and either Dartmouth or Yale in the Ivy League Shootout. The Tigers will return home after fall break to face a pair of their biggest rivals, Cornell and Colgate, to kick off ECAC play.

Women's Soccer: Princeton 2 games shy of NCAA bid

Just one year ago, the Princeton women’s soccer team had an Ivy League record of 1-4 and was headed toward a sixth-place finish in the conference. Its 10 overall losses that year were the second most in program history. This year, however, has been a different story. With two games remaining in the regular season, the Tigers sit alone atop the Ivy League standings and are in control of their own destiny.

Football: Tigers look to keep momentum in Ithaca

Coming off its biggest win in the tenure of head coach Bob Surace ’90, the football team will put its undefeated Ivy League record on the line against Cornell this Saturday in Ithaca, N.Y. Princeton, which stands alone atop the Ivy League for the first time in over half a decade, will look to carry over momentum from last week’s huge comeback victory at home against Harvard.

Stat Corner: Evaluating Harvard's 4th-and-1 decision

With two minutes and eight seconds remaining in Saturday’s football game, Harvard punted on fourth-and-1 from midfield, giving Princeton possession. You know what happened next: The Tigers drove 90 yards to complete a miraculous comeback and win 39-34. But they might never have had that chance had the Crimson gone through with that fourth-down play; a successful conversion would have allowed the visitors to run out the clock. Should they have taken that gamble?

Men's Water Polo: For Princeton, each unique pool adds another dimension

It’s difficult to imagine that an NCAA-sanctioned sport would allow conference games to be played in facilities whose specifications are not uniform but merely recommended — that a playing field could be so subjective that an NCAA national championship could be held in a facility whose significant dimensions can extensively vary, depending on an arbitrary year of the facility’s construction. But this kind of subjectivity is all too familiar to collegiate water polo players, at times entirely transforming their sport depending on the facility in which they play.

Football: Freshman corner Gaffney breaks out for Tigers

After returning a kickoff 59 yards to trigger a thrilling come from behind win for the football team, freshman cornerback Anthony Gaffney has proven himself up to the challenge of starting for the Tigers and has shown that he has the maturity to make big plays in big situations. While the football program run by head coach Bob Surace ’90 and a Princeton diploma certainly factored into Gaffney’s decision to join the Tigers, it was the Orange Bubble’s proximity to home that drew him the most.

Field Hockey: No. 2 Princeton hands No. 4 UConn 1st loss

The field hockey team continued its impressive play this weekend with a couple of home wins over Harvard and Connecticut. The big game was against Connecticut on Sunday (16-1), which was undefeated coming into the game. The No. 4 Huskies are the sixth ranked team that No. 2 Princeton (13-1 overall, 5-0 Ivy League) has had to play so far in the season. The Tigers have succeeded in all but one of these matchups, in which they fell to then-No. 2 Syracuse.

Men's Soccer: Wettermann scores game-winner in OT

After 102 minutes of relentless, physical play, the men’s soccer team created a final great opportunity deep in the Harvard end when senior defender Mark Linnville launched a long throw-in from the left sideline. Linnville’s toss sailed into the box, flicking the head of freshman defender Josh Miller in traffic and bouncing up in the air before settling at the feet of sophomore midfielder Alex Wettermann. Wettermann took a quick settling touch with space before rocketing a right-footed shot from 12 yards out, beating the keeper to the right. The goal, the first of Wettermann’s Princeton career, catapulted Princeton to a 2-1 victory over the rival Crimson and incited mass celebration at Roberts Stadium on Saturday evening.
