On Tap with ... Jonathan Vitez

Junior Jonathan Vitez has always been a solid contributor to the No. 13 men’s cross country team. At the Ivy League Championships on Oct. 27, however, Vitez broke through with a huge race to place seventh overall in a new personal best for 8 kilometers. His performance helped propel Princeton to its third straight title and one of the lowest team scores in Heps history. The men’s and women’s cross country teams will compete at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional today with the goal of making it through to the NCAA Championships. Vitez spent some time with the ‘Prince’ to talk about his nickname, terrible running experiences and his sprouting beard.

Swimming & Diving: Teams set to open season at DeNunzio Pool

When the men’s swimming and diving team won last season’s Ivy League Championship meet, it solidified a four-year reign atop Ancient Eight swimming. Last year’s seniors went their entire Princeton careers without losing an Ivy Champs meet, a feat that had not been achieved since 1992, when Ivy League swimming and diving teams competed in the Eastern Intercollegiate Swim League.

Football: Devout junior Wilson emerges as top target

What was going through Roman Wilson’s mind as he made one of the biggest plays in Princeton football history?“I was just running as fast as I could,” he said. “Just trying to keep my eye on the ball.”That simple attitude, exemplified by the 36-yard catch that sealed a stunning comeback victory against Harvard three weeks ago, is typical of the junior wide receiver from Broken Arrow, Okla. The possibility of losing focus, or of doing anything halfheartedly, seems never to have crossed Wilson’s mind.

Field Hockey: Tigers draw No. 2 seed, will face Drexel in NCAA tournament

The field hockey team swept through its opponent in the NCAA play-in game on Tuesday, as No. 2 Princeton shut out No. 13 Lafayette, 6-0, at Columbia’s Baker Athletics Complex in New York. Fresh off a one-loss regular season and an undefeated Ivy League season, the Tigers (17-1 overall, 7-0 Ivy League), led by three goals from senior striker Kat Sharkey, had no problem dealing with the Leopards (16-1). Princeton will now move on to the first round of the NCAA tournament to face Drexel in Charlottesville, Va., on Saturday.

Men's Basketball: Tigers have tall roster, taller expectations

The men’s basketball team is back, and the Tigers are hungry. After failing to follow up the 2010 season’s amazing run in which the team came within two points of knocking out eventual Final Four team Kentucky, Princeton failed to return to the NCAA tournament after finishing third in the Ivy League last year. However, the Tigers are confident going into this season, having been picked first in the Ivy League preseason poll in which they received all but one of the first place votes.

Women's Basketball: Princeton chases 4th Ivy League title, 1st tournament win

Since head coach Courtney Banghart took the helm of the women’s basketball team in 2007, expectations have only continued to rise. During the 2011-12 season, Princeton continued to live up to some of those expectations, as it earned a ranking as high as No. 24 in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll. This was the first time an Ivy League team had achieved a national ranking, and the Tigers went on to claim a No. 9 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Undefeated in the Ivy League last season, Princeton looks to continue its dominance and claim a fourth straight league title.

Basketball: Senior stars do it all for men's, women's teams

Senior forwards Ian Hummer and Niveen Rasheed took very different paths to Princeton. But as they enter their final years in orange and black, the two seniors’ basketball careers have converged. As the top returning scorers and rebounders in their respective leagues, Hummer and Rasheed enter the season as Ivy League Player of the Year favorites — and both could end their careers by leading their teams to conference titles.

Men's Soccer: Seniors lead hosts to 3-0 rout of Penn

From players perpetually in the starting lineup to those who lead the reserve team, nearly every member of the men’s soccer team’s Class of 2013 played a key role in the Tigers’ home shutout of Penn on Saturday night. Among those seniors standing out in Princeton’s home finale was Max Gallin, who reassumed the role of starting goalkeeper — which he held for nearly all of the 2011-12 season — and confirmed his ability to lead the team to an overwhelming victory.
