Women's Basketball: Cagers forced to play Ivy season one-handed*

After going 41-1 in conference play over the last three seasons, the women’s basketball team will have an extra challenge this year. When Princeton kicks off league play against Penn tomorrow, the Tigers will play with one arm tied behind their backs. Literally. According to the league office, the Ivy League has instituted this policy in order to “make the games halfway interesting.”

Football: Coach refuses to start popular left-handed quarterback*

Head coach Bob Surace ’90 surprised fans this week by refusing to name left-handed sophomore Quinn Epperly the starting quarterback for the football team’s final game of the season. With rookie Kedric Bostic sidelined due to concussion symptoms, Surace will instead be turning back to a more conventional quarterback with right-handed sophomore Connor Michelsen, who was benched two weeks prior.

Badminton Club beats TCNJ; students storm court*

Mere seconds after junior Racket McBirdie sent the final birdie to the floor in Dillon Gymnasium, hundreds of students stormed out of the bleachers and rushed onto the court, jubilantly celebrating the badminton club’s 5-2 victory over The College of New Jersey on Thursday night. The celebration continued a trend of Princeton court-stormings that has become even more prevalent in recent months.

Women's Basketball: Rookie quintet makes early contributions

Every season, there are always uncertainties about how the freshmen on a team will adjust to college-level play and the extent to which they will be able to contribute. For the five freshmen on the women’s basketball team, however, these questions have hardly been an issue. Despite the presence of a talented senior class, the freshmen quintet, consisting of guards Amanda Berntsen, Michelle Miller and Annie Tarakchian along with forwards Alex Wheatley and Taylor Williams, has received considerable playing time and provided an offensive boost in scoring and rebounding for the Tigers. The Class of 2016 has combined to score nearly a quarter of the Tigers’ total points so far this season, with each member averaging at least five minutes per game.

Men's Hockey: Princeton alumni return to ice after NHL lockout

After a fierce 16-hour discussion in a midtown Manhattan hotel, rumors circulated on the morning of Jan. 6 that the NHL and the NHLPA would bring the competition back to the ice and away from the negotiating table. Both sides have all but promised the fans a 48-game or 50-game schedule after the lockout, the second-longest stoppage in the past decade behind the full-season lockout of 2004-05. The conclusion of the lockout will be welcome news for five Princeton alumni: George Parros ’03, Kevin Westgarth ’07, Jeff Halpern ’99, Darroll Powe ’07 and Mike Moore ’08.

Football: Brown recovers at home after life-threatening incident

On Oct. 9, Sophomore cornerback Khamal Brown was rushed to the hospital after he became sick and unresponsive in afternoon practice. Doctors performed an emergency operation to drain out blood that had accumulated in his brain and later determined that the rupturing of an arteriovenous malformation — or AVM, an abnormal connection of veins and arteries — had caused the blood spillage.The AVM was likely present since birth, and there is no reason to believe the rupturing was at all football-related. Brown has been in stable condition since being released from the hospital in late October and will take the spring semester off from school to recover at his home in Atlanta.

The women’s hockey team seemed like two different squads when it faced Connecticut in a two-game series at the Freitas Ice Forum on Wednesday and Thursday. After losing to the Huskies in a crushing 5-1 defeat on Wednesday, Princeton (6-10-2 overall, 2-8-2 ECAC) came out on Thursday and handily beat Connecticut 4-1.

Men's Basketball: Barclays Center welcomes Tigers to Brooklyn

A few hours after the men’s basketball team lost to Fordham at the Barclays Center last weekend, the fans started filing in. Sporting navy blue shirts and yellow towels, the had come to support their Michigan Wolverines as they took on West Virginia in the NBA’s newest and most hyped-up arena.The crowd for the Michigan-West Virginia game was far larger than the crowd that came out to support St. Johns or St. Francis in the game before that, which in turn was larger than the fan base that turned out for Princeton or Fordham in the day’s first game. But for the Barclays Center, which is trying to establish itself as a “must-play” for both local schools and top national teams, the pull and popularity of the teams it invites to play are not necessarily the most important factor.

Men's Basketball: Tigers to play at Barclays Center

The men’s basketball team will look to get the season back on track when they travel to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., to take on Fordham this Saturday after having blown another second-half lead against Drexel in their last outing, dropping the Tigers to 3-5. Fordham (1-8) is the perfect opponent for Princeton to attempt just that as the Rams have lost five games in a row.

Currently tied for fifth in the ECAC, one of the deepest conferences in Division I, Princeton (3-6-3 overall, 2-3-3 ECAC) has held its own against a number of nationally ranked teams.
