For most athletes, the final game of a season means the end of competition for that year. Football players removed their pads, soccer players untied their cleats and swimmers loosened their goggles. After months of balancing class, practice and gameplay, their schedules become less packed with athletic responsibilities. But a small group of Princeton atheletes dons the orange and black again and competes in more than one season.

On Tap with ... Michael Dye

In the men’s volleyball team’s loss to Harvard on Saturday, there was a point in the third set when the tide turned for the Tigers, thanks to sophomore middle blocker Michael Dye. Princeton started the set lagging behind Harvard, but a kill and a block from Dye tied the game at four, and he later provided another kill for the side-out and served Princeton ahead 11-8.

Softball: Tigers split doubleheader with Lehigh

Wednesday afternoon, the softball team split a two-game series while hosting Lehigh at Class of 1895 Field. The Tigers lost the first game in a 4-0 shutout but rebounded the second time around to win 3-2.

Baseball: Bats come alive in 20-hit victory at rival Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — The baseball team had won six games in a row heading into Tuesday’s match against Rutgers at Bainton Field. On the back of a strong pitching performance by freshman A.J. Goetz and an 11-run outburst, Princeton (10-13 overall, 4-0 Ivy League) was able to extend its winning streak to seven.

Men's Basketball: Fairfield Stags lure Johnson ’97

After the men’s basketball team was knocked out of the NCAA Tournament by Kentucky guard Brandon Knight’s last-second layup, senior co-captains Dan Mavraides and Kareem Maddox sat somberly at the press conference, knowing that they had played their final game ever for Princeton.Nobody in the room expected that the man sitting to their left would also not return to the program.

Women's Golf: Shon, Boberg, Scarpetta lead Tigers to 3rd place at Hoya Invitational

The women’s golf team competed in the Hoya Invitational tournament in Beallsville, Md., this past Monday and Tuesday. After finishing out Monday’s play with a tie for third place in a 17-team pool, Tuesday’s play was cancelled due to rain, so the Tigers kept their tie for third finish. Nova Southeastern University finished in first place, four strokes ahead of second place Yale. Princeton and Penn tied for third, 13 strokes behind Nova Southeastern.

Around the Ivies: Cornell, Harvard start strong in conference play

It took the men’s lacrosse team four overtime periods to secure its first victory in Ivy League play. Princeton (2-5 overall, 1-2 Ivy League) has suffered multiple injuries to key players, including an arm injury that will keep freshman short stick defensive midfielder Nick Fernandez out for the rest of the year and a groin injury that has likely ended senior midfielder and co-captain Jack McBride’s season. The Tigers are currently tied for fifth in the Ivy League.

Women's Water Polo: Tigers take 2 but fall to No. 7 Michigan at DeNunzio Pool

On Saturday, the women’s water polo team topped Bucknell 12-5. The No. 18 Princeton Tigers (13-9 overall, 4-1 Southern) then returned to the pool on Sunday to fall to No. 7 Michigan 12-10 and to defeat St. Francis 11-2.

After opening Ivy League play with wins against Penn last weekend, the men’s and women’s tennis teams faced other Ivy opponents, Brown and Yale, this weekend in New England and at home. Coming off of tough matches against Penn, at which both teams won by a score of 4-3, the No. 58 Tigers knew that the Ivy League had become more competitive.

Men's Volleyball: Crimson overcomes 2-0 deficit to defeat Tigers in rivalry match

It’s certainly been an exciting year for the Princeton-Harvard sports rivalry, and men’s volleyball has been no exception. The Tigers (3-15 overall, 1-8 EIVA Tait Division) have now played two five-game matches this year, both of them against Harvard, but neither time has the outcome been favorable for the Tigers. Princeton has struggled to notch wins this year, losing to Harvard at Dillon Gymnasium on Saturday in five sets by a score of 25-19, 25-22, 22-25, 21-26, and 6-15.

Basketball coach Johnson '97 leaves University for Fairfield

After leading the men’s basketball team to its first NCAA tournament appearance since 2004, head coach Sydney Johnson ’97 is leaving Princeton to become the head coach at Fairfield University.Johnson told the team about the move in a private meeting on Monday afternoon.“We have nothing but great feelings about him and for what he’s done for us, and [we] wish him well for the future,” guard and co-captain Dan Mavraides ’11 said.

Victories over Brown (3-15 overall, 1-3 Ivy League) and Yale (12-10, 2-2) on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, marked a strong start to the league season for the Tigers (9-13, 4-0), who already look more potent than they looked last year.
