The women’s lacrosse team (5-4 overall, 2-1 Ivy League) reeled in a clutch win at Temple on Wednesday afternoon to keep its season record above .500. The Tigers fought back from a 12-9 deficit during the second half, finishing with a 5-1 scoring run to claim an exciting 14-13 victory.

Baseball: Walks, walk-off doom Tigers at Rutgers

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – After 23 walks, 22 runs and 21 hits through eight-and-a-half innings on Tuesday afternoon, the baseball team’s game at Rutgers still came down to the last pitch. Leading off the bottom of the ninth, second baseman Nick Favatella swung at an offering from freshman reliever Tyler Foote and blasted it over the fence in left-center field, giving the Scarlet Knights a 12-11 non-conference victory.

Women's Lacrosse: Freshman goalie adjusts quickly to college

When goalkeeper Erin Tochihara ’11 graduated last spring, she left behind an impressive legacy and big shoes to fill on the women’s lacrosse team. A two-time All-America honoree, her strong presence in the net helped lead her team to the 2011 Ivy League championship title. This season, the Tigers continue to succeed, despite the loss of their experienced veteran keeper. Protecting the goal for Princeton this year is freshman Annie Woehling, who has started in all eight games so far this season.

The softball team took on Seton Hall at home on Tuesday in only its third home series of the season. The Tigers (6-19 overall, 2-2 Ivy League) have not had much success so far this season, but they were able to split the series against a fairly strong opponent in Seton Hall (18-18, 0-5 Big East).

Tennis: Teams open Ivy League play 1-0

The men’s and women’s tennis teams enjoyed a successful opening to Ivy League play this weekend as the men defeated Penn in Philadelphia on Saturday and the women beat the Quakers at Jadwin Gymnasium. Despite falling behind 3-1 early, the men rallied off three straight singles victories to defeat Penn 4-3, with junior Matt Siow providing the clinching win in a third-set tiebreaker. The No. 70 women opened the match against the Quakers by sweeping the doubles point and continued to dominate on the singles courts to defeat Penn 6-1.

Track & Field: McCullough, Tigers bring momentum outdoors

The indoor season for the men’s and women’s track teams was one for the record books. Shattering conference and school records across the board, having two athletes qualify for the NCAA championships and taking home the men’s Ivy League title, the Tigers ensured that the 2012 season will be remembered as one of the greatest. However, for both teams, indoors is not even supposed to be a main focus. It is really only a stepping-stone, a building phase, to the outdoor track campaign.

After 19 straight road games against nonconference foes, the softball team finally kicked up some dirt and grass on Class of 1895 Field, picking up a pair of wins this weekend to start Ivy League play. The Tigers (5-18 overall, 2-2 Ivy League) opened up with 4-0 and 5-2 wins over Dartmouth on Friday before being swept by Harvard the following afternoon.

When senior attacker Barb Previ scored with 0.3 seconds left in the first half of overtime to reduce the women’s lacrosse team’s deficit to a single goal, spectators were left wondering if they were about to witness a sensational comeback by the Tigers after a careless start to the extra period. But No. 17 Cornell hung on in the second half of overtime to consign No. 19 Princeton (4-4 overall, 2-1 Ivy League) to its first Ivy League loss of the season on Saturday afternoon.

Men's Volleyball: Princeton nearly shocks No. 8 Penn State

In what was a heartbreaking weekend for the men’s volleyball team, the Tigers dropped exciting matches to No. 8 Penn State and St. Francis. After winning its first individual set against the Nittany Lions in its last eight matches, Princeton took a 2-1 lead and was just inches away from handing Penn State its first EIVA loss since 2008 in what would have been the biggest upset of the season. But the effort of Friday night’s incredible game clearly left its mark on the Tigers, as they watched St. Francis rally for three sets to win 3-1 the next day.

Baseball: Pitchers lead strong start to title defense

Fans who were at all four of the baseball team’s games this weekend saw a little bit of everything. Some games were pitchers’ duels; some looked more like batting practice. Sometimes the defense was tight; sometimes games were decided by sloppy play. When the weekend concluded, the Tigers emerged with a 3-1 record and looking ready to defend their title of Ivy League champions.

Women's Lacrosse: Princeton tests 2-0 mark in ranked battle

On Saturday afternoon, the women’s lacrosse team will look to continue its undefeated conference streak when it hosts Cornell. Historically, the No. 19 Tigers (4-3 overall, 2-0 Ivy League) have dominated in the competitions versus the No. 17 Big Red, winning 30 of 33 meetings, including a 15-10 victory last year in Ithaca, N.Y. However, Cornell has proven to be a strong force on the road this season, wining all four of its away games. The last time the Big Red traveled to Princeton, it knocked the Tigers out of the top 20 with an 11-8 upset in 2010.

Softball: 1st home contests open league slate

With spring officially here, the sounds of bats on balls will finally return to Princeton’s campus. After returning from a 10-game California trip over spring break, during which it went 1-9, the softball team is looking to turn its season around with the beginning of Ivy League competition. Princeton will open its season with two games against Dartmouth today, starting at 2 p.m., before playing a Saturday doubleheader against defending champion Harvard, which appears to be the conference favorite again in 2012.

The men’s lacrosse team seeks to continue its Ivy League crusade in Providence, R.I., on Saturday. The No. 11 Tigers have emerged with an overwhelming win in each of their past three games, beginning with a 14-8 victory against then-No. 10 Villanova on March 13. Brown, on the other hand, enters this weekend with a loss in its rearview after a surprisingly close 9-8 defeat to No. 8 Duke.

Baseball: Ivy play starts where 2011 series ended

Joe Sclafani likely remembers exactly where he was when his 2011 season ended: standing on first base. In the top of the ninth inning, in game three of the Ivy League Baseball Championship Series, Dartmouth’s starting shortstop was on first with no outs. But Princeton closer A.J. Goetz ended the game without allowing Sclafani to reach second, and the Tigers took the game and the conference title, 8-5.

Rugby: Teams play for titles, charity at 6th Annual Rickerson Cup

The men’s and women’s rugby teams will participate in the Sixth Annual Rickerson Cup this Saturday. The tournament is the championship for the state of New Jersey, and the Princeton men will attempt to win a fifth consecutive title this year. The women’s team was a finalist in the tournament last year and hopes to return to the championship game.
