As grad student union builds, Graduate Student Government votes to release message of support

The Princeton Graduate Student Government Assembly (GSG) voted to release a message of support for Princeton Graduate Students United (PGSU), at their meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 21. The vote comes less than a week after a PGSU rally on Feb.15, which drew over 150 supporters of the unionization effort.

The Council of the Princeton University Community (CPUC) met for their first meeting of 2023 on Monday, Feb. 20. University President Christoper L. Eisgruber ’83 was present and addressed his annual letter, campus expansion, and a renewed focus on diversity.

Graduate students, along with undergraduates and post-graduate students, gathered together with Princeton Graduate Students United (PGSU) to demand fair wages and better working conditions from the University.  PGSU also began their union card campaign, which makes organizing efforts an official union campaign.

Shaun Cason ’23 and Anna Allport ’23 win Sachs scholarships

Shaun Cason ’23 was awarded the Sachs Scholarship to pursue a master’s degree at Worcester College at University of Oxford. He is the first veteran and the first transfer student to win the award. Anna Allport ’23, an independent concentrator in performance studies and interdisciplinary theater at Princeton, was also awarded the Sachs Global Scholarship,

At its Feb.13 meeting, the USG approved a $290,000 budget and Treasurer Walker Penfield ’25 explained that he plans to tap into additional reserve funds. The USG also approved the Ad Hoc Committees on Student Disciplinary Processes and Data Analysis.

The building currently located at 91 Prospect Avenue will be rotated and moved to the other side of that street beginning on Feb. 8. The process is expected to take four days to complete with street closures and pedestrian detours planned to last until the end of the month. The University has not undertaken a building relocation prior to this project since 1977 when it moved residential homes to Nassau Court.

Following two earthquakes — one at 7.8 magnitude and one at 7.6 magnitude — in Syria and Turkey, students have begun a donation campaign for survivors of the tragedy. Student leaders in the Turkish Student Association (TSA) emphasized the importance of a quick distribution of resources.

Some members of the Princeton community have expressed concern about an upcoming lecture by Palestinian writer Mohammed El-Kurd. The Princeton Committee on Palestine has expressed continued support for the event, and the Alliance of Jewish Progressives has raised concerns about the criticism of El-Kurd. The English department will continue with the lecture on Wednesday, Feb. 8 as planned.
