In a move that few expected, President Christopher Eisgruber ’83 announced that from Jan. 32 onwards, the U.S. Congress will be owned by the University and will operate as a branch of the University.
In a late vote Thursday night, over 500 squirrels voted to unionize and form Nutcrackers Local 522. The vote was marred by allegations leveled against organizers by chipmunks that accused the organizers of leaving them out of the process. These protests were discarded after attendants were reminded that it was time to hibernate. “CHEHEHEHEHE,” said one voter after all acorns had been counted. “CHEHCHEHEH HEHCHE! WHEHEHSHHEHEHWH!”
“We’ve herd the voices of the students and we truly believe this to be the best decision,” said President Eisgruber. “The ox is a symbol of service and courage, and when we at Princeton see a good idea like this, we milk it for all it’s worth.”
On Jan. 4, 2017, former New Jersey Governor Brendan Byrne ’49 died at his home in Livingston, N.J. Nicknamed the “The Man the Mob Couldn’t Buy,” Byrne served two terms as New Jersey’s chief executive from 1974 to 1982. Byrne was 93 when he passed from a lung infection.
The University’s reason for rejecting all but one of the referenda, according to faculty, is the lack of faculty involvement in developing the large-scale changes the referenda would have made to the Honor Code, a 125-year-old agreement between students and faculty. Administrators say faculty support is necessary for alterations as fundamental and consequential as those proposed by the first three referenda.
Eating club officers have resigned for many reasons, included everything from criminal charges to security breaches to philosophical differences with the rest of the corps. Over the years, these resignations and security breaches have resulted in modifications to the structure of the ICC and eating club officer corps.
According to the alert, the leak was reported at 8:30 a.m. Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G), an electrical services company, worked to repair the leak, and emergency responders remained on campus until the leak was closed.
After an eight-month battle with cancer, Kaplan, a talented computer programmer, passed away on Dec. 24, 2017. He was 21 years old.

Eric Schmidt ’76 is stepping down from his role as executive chairman of Alphabet Inc., Google’s parent company, according to a Dec. 21 statement from Alphabet. Schmidt served as Google’s chief executive officer from 2001 to 2011. He will be transitioning into a technical advisor role at Alphabet and will continue to serve on the company’s Board of Directors.
In an email sent Dec. 19, the Tiger Inn Board of Governors informed TI members that Trey Aslanian ’18 and Divya Mehta ’18 have been asked to step down as TI’s president and safety czar, respectively. Current vice president Allison Lee ’18 will become TI’s interim president until spring officer elections.
“Every referendum, each referendum, got so many votes that each referendum had a majority of all Princetonians — not a majority of those who voted. But a majority of all Princetonians voted in favor of each one,” USG academics chair Patrick Flanigan ’18 emphasized.
One of the University’s longest-running traditions has come to a close. For almost 150 years, most graduating classes have placed an engraved stone commemorating their graduation years on the walls of Nassau Hall. But space for new stones on the building’s exterior has become increasingly limited in recent years, so starting next spring, class stones will now be placed around the two walkways that lead to Nassau Hall.
An email sent to University students late Thursday afternoon stated that one undergraduate student is sick with a “probable” case of the chickenpox virus and noted that another student is has a confirmed case of the mumps virus. According to the email, both students are expected to fully recover.
Though the University earns SRECs from the energy its solar field produces, the University currently sells those SRECs to pay off the initial loan for the solar field, explained Engineering and Campus Energy executive director Thomas Nyquist. As such, the SREC-measured value of the energy produced by its solar field is masked, at least on paper.
A new task force, chaired by Vice President for Campus Life W. Rochelle Calhoun, has been created to continue building relationships between the University and the 11 eating clubs. The task force, composed of appointed University staff, students, and alumni, is charged with reviewing the outcomes that stem from the recommendations of the 2009–2010 task force — particularly those concerned with diversity and inclusivity.
University seniors Hans Hanley and Jennifer Silver have been named recipients of the Daniel M. Sachs Class of 1960 Graduating Scholarship. The award is one of the University’s highest honors, intended to broaden the global experience of its participants by providing them the opportunity to study, work, or travel abroad after graduation.
On Dec. 13, the Office of Communications announced that President Christopher Eisgruber ’83 had joined over two dozen university presidents from campuses across the nation to found the Presidents’ Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration. According to their mission statement, this alliance is “dedicated to increasing public understanding” about the impact immigration policies have on students, their campuses, and their communities.
The University admitted 799 students out of a record 5,402 applicants under the single-choice early action (SCEA) program to the Class of 2022. The admission rate of 14.7 percent was the lowest yet under the SCEA program, following a 15.4 percent early admission rate in 2016 and a 18.6 percent early admission rate in 2015.
“I lost faith in academia. I do not trust universities to look out for our best interest,” reads the entry. “I feel like I did everything right (reporting, waiting for the process) and it didn't matter … I don't trust anyone to be safe. I don't want academia any more.”
