“Before it was officially denoted the Paul Robeson House, the property at the corner of Witherspoon and Green Street was everything from a grocery store to private residence to rooming house. Notably, it was the home where Paul Robeson, famed athlete, artist, performer, and activist, was born. While the House’s purpose has evolved over the past two centuries, each new version has stood as a source of refuge, amity, and culture for Princeton’s African American community. Today, the House is undergoing a new change as members of the very area it serves rally together to preserve its history and mission.”

This week, over a hundred students gathered on the lawn outside Nassau Hall to stand in solidarity with the MOVE organization in Philadelphia in protest of Princeton and the University of Pennsylvania’s handling of the remains of 1985 MOVE police bombing victims. As of Friday, the remains of the MOVE bombings victims have been moved to a West Philadelphia funeral home.

Soon, the Committee will either reject the proposal or recommend it to the Board of Trustees for final consideration. As Divest Princeton awaits the decision, the ‘Prince’ examined the history of divestment movements on campus — both successful and not.
