Each week, Sports and Data writers analyze recent athletic competitions to provide analysis and insight on the happenings of Princeton athletics and individual players across the 38 intercollegiate teams at Princeton. Whether they are record-breaking or day-to-day, statistics deliver information in concise ways and help inform fans who might have missed the action. Read past By the Numbers coverage here.

Princeton Tigers: April 10–21

Forty-nine games and matches were played across 18 sports and 10 U.S. states over the past 11 days. Of the 30 games where only one team came out on top, the Tigers won 70 percent of matches, up from the 63 percent win rate from the week prior. Multiple day meets and tournaments are counted individually for each day of the competition. Competitions with more than one event or individual results — such as golf and cross country — are not included in our win percentage analysis.

This week, the Tigers won over two-thirds of their games. They have continued to perform strongly at home, winning 12 of 16. The Tigers brought their best on the road as well, taking 9 of 15 when away from Princeton, including softball’s 8–0 shutout at Cornell.

Dazzling discus

During women’s track and field’s trip down to Charlottesville, VA, first-year Layla Giordano spun her way up to third place in the Tigers all-time record books in the discus throw. The New Jersey native’s massive 56.16 meter toss fell only 4 centimeters short of her senior teammate Siniru Ihoema’s second-place record toss from the East Regionals last year.

Sweet six

For the first time in six years, men’s volleyball will be hosting the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) playoffs. The Tigers clinched the regular season championship and the top-seed tournament spot with a win over Penn State this weekend.

Back 2 back

Just a week after setting an Ivy League record pole vault of 4.38 meters and winning an Ivy League Athlete of the Week award, junior Tessa Mudd eclipsed her own record this Saturday with a mark of 4.4 meters. The high-flying Mudd now owns the 10th-best height in the NCAA this year.

Exemplary eight

Joining her teammate Mudd with an electric leap this past weekend, junior Georgie Scoot launched herself 6.49 meters in the long jump, the eighth-best distance in the nation. Scoot sits in eighth for both the triple jump and the long jump so far this year.

Sixteen going on seventeen

With their thrilling hard-fought win over the Brown Bears on Saturday, No. 5 women’s lacrosse secured their 17th regular season Ivy League title. The Tigers have won outright or shared the Ivy League title in eight of the past 10 seasons, excluding two years missed due to COVID-19 pandemic.

Overwhelming offense

Throughout 15 Ivy League games, softball leads the Ancient Eight in batting average, on-base percentage, and OPS — a combination of on-base percentage and slugging percentage. The sizzling hot bats of the Tigers have played a major role in their 12–3 record in conference play this season.

Home pool heroes

The four seniors of No. 9 women’s water polo ended their illustrious career at Princeton with a 37–4 record at home at DeNunzio pool after their win on Wednesday over Wagner. The quartet of Kayla Yelensky, Grace Houlahan, Kate Mallery, and Rachel Carter also won a CWPA tournament championship in 2023.

From excellence track records to regular season championships, the Tigers notched many successes in the field and elsewhere and look to finish their spring seasons strong into the end of the semester. Check back in next week to learn about all things Princeton Athletics — By The Numbers.
