Derek Kilmer, who has represented Washington’s 6th District since 2012, has spent much of his eight years in the U.S. House fighting partisanship. A moderate Democrat, Rep. Kilmer serves as Chair of the New Democrat Coalition, a caucus of moderate and center-left Democrats that seeks to bridge the gap between left and right. The Coalition includes Rep. Terri Sewell ’86 (D-Ala.), who is also featured on our list.
He sits on the Defense, Interior and Environment, and Energy and Water Development Subcommittees within the House Committee on Appropriations. Notably, Rep. Kilmer also chairs the Select Committee on the Modernization of Congress. Earlier this year, the Select Committee published 97 recommendations to streamline the legislative process, from updating technology to directing funding to districts.
At the University, Rep. Kilmer concentrated in the School of Public and International Affairs. He went on to earn a doctorate in social policy at the University of Oxford.
