Jeff Bezos is the founder and CEO of Amazon, and the richest person in the world.
In 2020, Amazon and Bezos attracted ever-more controversy. This summer, Bezos, along with other big tech CEOs, testified before the House Judiciary Committee after a year-long investigation of potential antitrust violations. A rising concern in progressive politics, Amazon incurred criticism from Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s (D-N.Y.) primary opponent, Michelle Caruso-Cabrera, leveraged Amazon’s potential headquarters as a campaign issue.
Bezos also finances The Washington Post, the most-read paper in Washington, D.C., which is important in holding the Trump administration accountable. His ownership is a source of his animosity with President Donald Trump, who often attacks its coverage. Other Bezos-Trump controversies include the Trump administration awarding the $10 billion JEDI Contract to Microsoft to “screw” Amazon and Trump’s attempts to get the the U.S. Postal Service to “raise the prices” on Amazon.
Bezos graduated with a B.S.E. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.
