Going three-for-three this weekend, the women’s water polo team has shown it has what it takes going into the Southern Division championship. Playing Brown and Harvard on Saturday and then George Washington at home on Sunday, the No. 9 Tigers maintain their undefeated streak.
On Saturday, the Tigers defeated Brown 11-6 in a one-sided match. Brown started off with an early 1-0 lead in the first quarter, but was quickly stopped with goals from sophomore Diana Murphy and junior Ashley Hatcher. Senior Katie Rigler continued the strong offense and led the team in scoring with a total of three points in the first half. Senior Molly McBee mirrored the offense in the second half with a pair of goals herself. Defensively, the Princeton Tigers dominated, with sophomore goalie Ashleigh Johnson making 12 saves.
Later that day, the Tigers also battled against Harvard in what was another one-sided victory to win 8-4. Princeton’s defense proved key in this game, as the Tigers shut down the Harvard offense in the first and third quarters. Johnson had an excellent game, saving a total of 15 shots to keep the Crimson back. Princeton’s offense also succeeded with two points in each quarter. Murphy and junior Jessie Holechek scored two goals each, with other goals from Hatcher, McBee, Rigler and sophomore Pippa Temple.
On Sunday, to complete their weekend of Southern Division opponents, the Tigers played against the George Washington Colonials in their last home game of the season. Dominating once again, the Tigers beat the Colonials 16-6. The game started off close, scoreless until the last minute of the first quarter. However, after the half, Princeton sprinted away with the game. Princeton’s offense shone against the Colonials as Hatcher showed aggressive offense with a game-high of five goals. Temple and freshman Hannah Lapkin also led the team with three and two goals respectively.
The wins this weekend kept Princeton perfect in the Southern Division regular season, and the Tigers will travel to Harvard next weekend to play in the Southern Division championships.
“We know were better than these teams and we need to prove it,” Hatcher said. “We need to take care of them from the beginning.”
The women’s water polo team will face Harvard and GWU on the first day of the tournament.
“I’m excited to play Harvard again,” Hatcher said. “I really want to take care of business with them.”
