A Harvard College committee has proposed a five-point honor code and the creation of a Student-Faculty Judicial Board that would become the sole body to handle academic dishonesty cases, The Harvard Crimson reported. For the first time in Harvard’s history, the board would give students a role in adjudicating cases of academic dishonesty.
The proposal, which was scheduled to be delivered formally to Harvard faculty on Tuesday, was drafted by the Committee on Academic Integrity, a body created in fall 2010 that includes students, faculty and administrators.
The announcement comes eight months after news broke of a cheating scandal in which roughly 125 students in the government department’s “Introduction to Congress” course were accused of inappropriately collaborating on the course’s take-home final exam. Harvard’s existing Student-Faculty Judicial Board has heard just one case since its inception in 1987.
