Regarding “Editorial: Sex reassignment surgery”

I want to extend my thanks to the editorial staff of the 'Prince' for supporting and affirming the need for a fully trans-inclusive health care plan for students and faculty. Two things seem to be missing from the public discussion of this issue. First, the ideal for any community should not be to provide some people with access to a minimal standard of care, but to assure everyone access to the very best standard of medical care. The American Medical Association, American Psychological Association, International Endocrine Society, World Professional Organization for Transgender Health and numerous other professional groups have agreed that the standard of care for treating transgender people should include access to gender-confirming hormonal and surgical interventions. In many places, it is only folks with substantial financial resources and community supports who can actually access these things, in part because insurance companies do what they can to exclude such care. Right this minute, Princeton students with family support and financial resources can access good care, if they can pay for it out of pocket. Shouldn't all students and staff have that same access? Second, it bears remembering that these are not abstract debates. These are conversations about the deepest and most private parts of individual people's lives, bodies and identities. People who are your classmates, dorm mates, support staff and teachers. People, in other words, who deserve your care, respect, support and love.
