A column written by history concentrator Caroline Kitchener ’14 called “When sexual assault counseling in US colleges is not confidential” was published in The Guardian on Tuesday.
Kitchener criticized the University’s sexual assault advising system, noting that Sexual Harassment/Assualt Advising, Resources and Education peer advisers cannot guarantee confidentiality to students who have been sexually assaulted and come to them seeking advice.
Kitchener is a former columnist for The Daily Princetonian.
She noted that sexual assault advisers at Rutgers receive state-approved training, which grants them the legal privilege to guarantee anonymity. While there are counselors Princeton students can visit that have these privileges, Kitchener wrote that students feel more comfortable talking to peers about their experiences.
Part of the problem, according to Kitchener, is that training peer advisers costs universities more money.
As of Tuesday night, the column appeared on the front opinion page of The Guardian’s website and had received more than 50 comments.
