Regarding “Slaughter ’80 reflects on her article in The Atlantic on balancing work and family” (Monday, Dec. 3, 2012)

I appreciated the story covering my talk yesterday. But I want to clarify two important points. First, I specifically said that my Princeton colleagues fully understood why I would come home after two years; they know what a great job this is. I was referring to people outside the University to whom I talked in Princeton and New York when I talked about devaluation. Second, I do NOT think that women should be encouraged to leave work to spend time with their children or even to work less. I think that women and men should make whatever choices work for them and their families. But if they do find that they need to stop working or work differently, then they should be able to get back on the track later.
