Cloister plans Hall of Honor

In celebration of its 100th anniversary this year, Cloister Inn will be unveiling a “Hall of Honor” to honor Cloister war veterans and an “Olympian Banner” to celebrate alumni who have competed in past Olympic Games.

The Cloister Inn Hall of Honor will include memorial plaques honoring Cloister alumni who are veterans of the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Cloister Graduate Board of Trustees Chairman Bradford Hart ’99 explained that Cloister has a rich history of service and takes the University’s informal motto of “In the Nation’s Service and in the Service of All Nations” very seriously.

Hart said the idea for this memorial came up a few years ago at a graduate board meeting where several members suggested that Cloister should add to the two existing bronze cast memorial plaques displayed in the club’s entryway that honor World War I and World War II veterans.

Hart and Cloister Graduate Board of Trustees member Stephan Whelan ’68 explained that they noticed Cloister has a large number of alumni who have served in the armed forces or have contributed to national security initiatives, a trend that they said is unsurprising. Hart said the large number of swimmers and rowers in the club’s membership demonstrate a consistent interest in service and athletics that “carries across generations.”

“My Class of 1968 had a lot of Cloister classmates that served in Vietnam in particular,” Whelan said, adding that between the classes of 1966 to 1969, there are at least 20 Cloister alumni who have served in the armed forces.

Hart explained that Cloister is coordinating with the University and potentially ROTC to ensure that all veterans are honored in the memorial.

While the project is still in the planning stages, Hart said the club has decided that the Hall of Honor will be located in the front portion of the club, joining the two existing memorials. The Hall of Honor is expected to have an unveiling in the first half of 2013, according to Whelan.

Cloister president Brian Wettach ’13 said he is looking to find a company that can make plaques replicating the style of the existing bronze cast memorials currently on display in the club.

In addition, the Olympian Banner the club plans to display will honor alumni such as Kevin Cotter ’96, a world-class rower who competed in the 1996 and 2000 Summer Olympics.

“I’m pretty sure Cloister has the most Olympians out of any club,” Wettach said. Wettach noted that six Cloister alumni competed in rowing events in the London 2012 Summer Olympics.

“I think it is pretty important that the club acknowledges the contributions of the rowers and swimmers. But it’s important to note that we’re not all about rowers and swimmers,” Wettach said.

The Hall of Honor and the Olympian Banner are intended to be permanent displays that the club can supplement in the future, Wettach said.
