Swimming & Diving: Tigers succeed at 1st meet

The men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams dominated the Big Al Open last weekend, combining to win 30 of 36 events held at DeNunzio Pool in the first meet of the season. A mix of veterans and rookies led both sets of Tigers to strong showings in the two-day meet.

Freshmen Nicole Larson and Sada Stewart of the women’s team won all three of their events, both winning races in two different strokes as well as individual medleys. Senior Sarah Furgatch won the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke and junior Maureen McCotter won the 1,650-yard freestyle.

For the men’s team, freshman En-Wei Hu-Van Wright won the 100 free, 100 back and 200 back to sweep his individual races. Fellow rookie Byron Sanborn won the 100 and 200 breast, while sophomores Caleb Tuten, Harrison Wagner and Oliver Bennett each also won events.

Both teams will race in their first Ivy League dual meets against Cornell and Penn next weekend.
