Penn plans to interview every applicant to the school by 2015 as part of a new interview program that will use Skype and phones to interview applicants that live in sparsely populated regions, according to The Daily Pennsylvanian.
Under the current system, Penn’s Office of Admission coordinates the alumni interviews but could only reach 50 percent of its applicants last year. The new system is run by Penn's Office of Alumni Relations. According to the leadership of the new program, the system will require Penn to reach out to parts of the country that are currently underserved, like Montana or North Dakota.
For students that live overseas or in hard-to-reach regions of the country, a new virtual committee will interview applicants via Skype or phone. The committee has already interviewed 75 applicants.
The Princeton Alumni Schools Committee currently conducts all interviews, and no on-campus interviews are offered. An interview is not a required component of the application, however, and if a Princeton alumnus does not live near the applicant, no interview is offered.
In the Class of 2015, three states — Wyoming, Alaska and South Dakota — are not represented. Dean of Admission Janet Rapelye has said her office works “very hard” to get students from states with lower populations to apply.
