Cory Booker, the Democratic mayor of Newark who has drawn attention for his heroics and active Twitter feed, has delayed a decision to challenge incumbent Republican N.J. Governor Chris Christie in 2013, according to the Newark-based Star-Ledger.
Booker had previously indicated that he planned to decide by mid-December whether to challenge Christie, who is popular statewide and delivered the keynote at the Republican National Convention this summer. Booker said on his monthly radio program on Thursday that Hurricane Sandy pushed back his timeline to make a decision.
Booker was elected mayor in 2006 and was reelected in 2010. If he does not run for governor in 2013, he could run for a third term as mayor in 2014 or instead choose to run for U.S. Senate in 2014.
A showdown between Booker and Christie would be competitive, according to the results of a Quinnipiac poll released in October.
"A sneak peak at the 2013 election for governor shows Newark Mayor Cory Booker could give Gov. Christie a run for his money, if the mayor decides to run,” the director of the Quinnipiac poll said at the time.
