Theft, prostitution and invasion of privacy cases remain unresolved

Brittany Smith, 20, of Keyport, N.J., appeared in court Monday after she was charged last week with theft and possession of controlled dangerous substances and drug paraphernalia.

Smith could be indicted for these charges, and her case has been moved up to the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office.

In addition, Smith had allegedly engaged in prostitution in the U-Store at 36 University Place with Eric Everett, 23, a former U-Store employee who was also arrested last week. Everett found Smith on Craigslist, and the two allegedly had sex in the U-Store three times for a price set by Smith, the police said.

Everett was charged with theft and prostitution. He was set to appear in court on Monday as well for a pretrial conference, but his court date has been rescheduled for Oct. 15. His case will remain in the Princeton Borough Municipal Court.

The Municipal Court handles disorderly persons offenses but not indictments for crimes, which are handled by superior courts throughout the state. The distinction is analogous to that between misdemeanors and felonies in other states.

The case of Richard Tuckwell ’15 was also elevated to a superior court for arraignment based on the nature of his charge. Tuckwell, 20, was charged with invasion of privacy after allegedly taking sexually explicit photos of another student while the victim was sleeping. Borough Police are also investigating an allegation of sexual assault.

Tuckwell’s attorney waived Monday’s appearance.
