News & Notes: Sororities give out more than 50 bids in the first year with rush ban

Kappa Kappa Gamma gave 22 total bids, Pi Beta Phi gave 15, and Kappa Alpha Theta gave between 14 and 16, according to sources within the organizations.

As a result of the University’s ban on freshman rush, these numbers are reduced significantly compared to those of past years, when each would offer around 50 bids. Without freshmen, sororities recruited for this year’s pledge classes out of a pool of sophomores, juniors and seniors.

The 74 non-freshmen who rushed this year far exceed the number of sophomores and upperclassmen who rushed in previous years. College Panhellenic president Caroline Slutsky ’14 told The Daily Princetonian last week that around 30 sophomores and few upperclassmen rushed sororities in past years.

While male students rush only one fraternity, female students rush all three Panhellenic sororities at the same time. Later on, students submit rankings of their preferences and may receive a bid from one of the three.

The ban on freshman rush was announced in the summer of 2011. Last spring, the administration announced that freshmen who rush and upperclassmen who conduct rush activities for freshmen would be suspended for one year.
