Urban Outfitters to open in December

Job listings on UrbanOutfitters.com indicate that a Nassau Street branch of the popular clothing chain Urban Outfitters will likely open in December of this year.

“Urban Outfitters is pleased to announce a new store opening in Princeton, N.J., in December 2012,” the job listing reads. “All candidates will be contacted by October 2012.”

Representatives from Urban Outfitters’ public relations department did not respond to repeated requests for comment.

The new Princeton location will be located at 42 Nassau Street, next to Talbots, in a location previously occupied by a portion of the Talbots store. The location also has signs for Urban Outfitters in the window in anticipation of the opening.

Managers at the Princeton Talbots location declined to comment and representatives from Talbots’s public relations team did not respond to requests for comment.

The new Urban Outfitters will also be located around the corner from Urban Grace, a locally owned clothing store that opened in March 2011.

Lisa Reiss, manager of Urban Grace, said she does not anticipate the new Urban Outfitters harming her business.

“Our stores serve very different demographics, so I am not worried about competition,” Reiss said. “Urban Outfitters is a great company, but we are more specific to our customers.”

To keep student customers after Urban Outfitters’s opening, Reiss said Urban Grace will continue to offer a 10 percent discount and maintain high standards of customer service.

Reiss explained that the opening of Urban Outfitters will not affect Urban Grace’s plans moving forward. Reiss added that the store will continue to focus on targeting students, parents and local customers with apparel covering all price points.

“I encourage the students to support local businesses because doing so supports the community they love, the town they love and the University they love,” Reiss said. “A large chain can never compete with a small boutique mentality and individualized attention to customers.”

Gabby Rogers ’16 said she has yet to shop on Nassau Street because the stores are expensive and not the style she tends to purchase, but she said she intends to visit the new Urban Outfitters location.

Adaure Nwaba ’16 added that if there was a student discount offered, she would look into shopping at the new Urban Outfitters in December.

Urban Outfitters first opened as a store called “The Free People’s Store” in 1970 in Philadelphia, close to the University of Pennsylvania. After the Nassau Street location opens in December, every Ivy League school will have an Urban Outfitters location close to its campus.
