Sports Shorts: Hoy’s hat trick sparks 5-2 win

The women’s soccer team throttled Lafayette on the road Wednesday night, winning 5-2 to bring its record back to .500. The Tigers (3-3-1) were led once again by senior forward Jen Hoy, who netted her second hat trick of the season, scoring three times in the first half.

Junior midfielder Erika Hoglund sparked the scoring, finding the net on a breakaway four minutes into the game. After that, it was Hoy’s turn to shine, as the senior scored twice in a 25-second span. She finished her hat trick with an unassisted goal in the 31st minute, bringing her season total to nine — already one more than her team-leading 2011 mark.

Lafayette (3-5-1) cut the lead to 4-1 before halftime, but senior midfielder Caitlin Blosser struck again for the visitors in the 63rd minute. Sophomore midfielder Jessica Haley set up the goal, her second assist of the night. Princeton took 19 shots to only six for the Leopards, including a 12-1 advantage in the first period.

The Tigers will take some momentum into their Ivy League schedule, which begins at Yale on Saturday.
