“After careful consideration of these proposals, the athletics directors decided that our current method of determining the Ivy League Champion and our automatic bid recipient to the NCAA Championship is the best model moving forward,” Ivy League Executive Director Robin Harris said in the release.
The Ivy League will remain the only basketball conference to determine its NCAA Tournament representatives by regular-season records. A proposal, drafted by Columbia head coach Kyle Smith which reportedly had the support of all eight men’s coaches, would have instituted a four-team tournament similar to the one currently in place for lacrosse. Others around the league, however, had expressed mixed reactions to the possibility.
