News & Notes: EMT awarded Jefferson Award for volunteerism

Princeton EMT who died attempting a rescue during Hurricane Irene

Kenwood, the only rescuer in the United States who was killed during the August hurricane, was attempting to reach a car submerged in a flooded Princeton street when he was swept off his feet and drowned. The car was empty.

Kenwood was one of 20 citizens honored for volunteer service, out of more than 1,400 nominations statewide.

Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno specifically cited Kenwood’s sacrifice at the award’s announcement on Wednesday.

“The volunteers we’re honoring tonight are nothing short of inspirational. From raising money so amputees can get prosthetics to a minister who lives with the homeless to help them become self-sustaining to a gentleman who overcame a handicap so he can drive homebound seniors to their appointments to an EMT who gave his life during Hurricane Irene, these volunteers, and many others, have set examples for us to follow,” she said.
