News & Notes: 4 professors elected to Academy of Sciences

Physics professor William Bialek, chemical and biological engineering professor Pablo Debenedetti, chemistry professor John Groves and physics professor Nai Phuan Ong were elected to the Academy.

Bialek came to the University in 2001 and is now associated with the multidisciplinary Lewis-Sigler Institute for Integrative Genomics. Bialek’s research lies at the intersection of physics and biology, studying brain computation and brain coding.

Debenedetti, vice dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, primarily studies condensed matter. Groves researches bioorganic and bioinorganic chemistry. Ong serves as the director of the Princeton Center for Complex Materials.

Political science professor Larry Bartels, who left Princeton for Vanderbilt at the end of last year, and Laszlo Lovasz, who is a visiting mathematics professor at the Institute for Advanced Study, were also elected to the Academy.

Correction: Due to a reporting error, a previous version of this article stated that Chemistry professor John Groves was the chair of the chemistry department. In fact, while Groves is the holder of the Hugh Stott Taylor Chair of Chemistry, Professor David MacMillan is the chair of the department. The 'Prince' regrets the error.
