Softball: Salcido becomes 3rd coach in 8 days to leave Princeton

Head softball coach Trina Salcido resigned on Tuesday evening, announcing her departure from the Princeton softball program. Salcido's departure is the third resignation by a Princeton head coach in the last eight days, following the departures of men's tennis head coach Glenn Michibata and women's tennis head coach Megan Bradley-Rose.

According to a University release, Salcido resigned to pursue other coaching opportunities after eight years at Princeton and five years as head coach for the Tigers.

The team heard the news from Salcido on Tuesday, junior outfielder Lizzy Pierce said.

"It was extremely emotional as she touched each of our lives in a special way during her time here. She helped bring each of us to Princeton, and that is the greatest gift any of us will ever receive," Pierce said in an email. "Last year, she was incredibly strong and led us through one of the deepest tragedies of our lives with the death of our teammate [Khristin Kyllo]. We are forever thankful for the amazing opportunities she has given us and the times she has supported us."

Salcido took the helm at Princeton in 2008 after former head coach Maureen Barron ’97 left the program. Her first season with the Tigers was her most successful one, taking Princeton to the NCAA Tournament after an 18-2 Ivy League season. Before that, Salcido had been an assistant to Barron for three years.

Princeton has finished below .500 in conference play in each of the last four years. Salcido finished with a 81-136 overall record, with a 47-53 mark in the league.

"We would like to thank Trina for her contribution to the softball program, and we wish her well in the future," Walters said in a University release.
