After a scoreless first inning in the first game, Princeton’s offense exploded in the second frame with a massive two-out rally. Junior shortstop Alyssa Schmidt brought home two runs with a bases-loaded double and then scored on a two-RBI single from freshman catcher Cara Worden. Senior third baseman Kelsey VandeBergh capped the six-run inning with her third home run of the season.
Junior outfielder Lizzy Pierce added two more runs with a third-inning homer, her first of the year. Kuhn struck out seven batters in five innings while allowing only one hit, a single in the second frame. The game was called with the Tigers leading 8-0 after four and a half frames.
The top of Princeton’s order gave the hosts an early lead again in the second game, as VandeBergh singled home Schmidt in the bottom of the first inning. After leaving the bases loaded in the second frame, the Tigers picked up two more runs in the third on VandeBergh’s second homer of the afternoon and a double by sophomore second baseman Tory Roberts. Roberts is also a sports writer for The Daily Princetonian.
Junior first baseman Alex Peyton’s home run capped a three-run sixth inning that put the game out of reach. La Salle spoiled Brown’s shutout attempt with a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning, but Brown got the final out to seal her second win. The freshman struck out seven batters without walking any.
The Tigers (11-20 overall, 5-3 Ivy League) have now won six of their last eight games after a 3-16 start. They will face Penn (20-13, 5-3), currently tied with Princeton for second place in the South Division standings, in a four-game home series on Saturday and Sunday.
After winning their first four Ivy League games, the Quakers dropped three of four at Dartmouth and Harvard last weekend. Alexis Borden has thrown the lion’s share of their innings, compiling a 3-2 record in Penn’s eight conference games. The Quakers rank second in the league with a 2.43 overall ERA.
The first Princeton-Penn game starts at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.
