On her 40th birthday, Assistant Professor of Creative Writing Tracy K. Smith was awarded the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for poetry for her book “Life on Mars,” a collection of poems published in 2011.
According to the New York Daily News, the poems in “Life on Mars” are inspired by Smith’s father, who died in 2008.

Smith, who earned a bachelor’s degree at Harvard and went on to receive an MFA from Columbia, began teaching at the University in 2006 after posts at the City University of New York, the University of Pittsburgh and Columbia.
This semester, Smith is teaching a section of CWR 202: Creative Writing (Poetry). In the fall, she will teach a section of CWR 201: Creative Writing (Poetry).
