Sports Shorts: Fencers perform well at Regional

Junior Ed Kelley took first place in the men’s epee for the second consecutive year, edging out three competitors from Duke. Classmate Jonathan Yergler fell short of automatic qualification in the same event, but he is expected to earn an at-large bid for his performance throughout the season.

Junior epeeist Hannah Safford and freshman foilist Ambika Singh also took individual titles on the women’s side. Singh was followed by sophomore Eve Levin in second place and freshman Sharon Gao in fifth. Three Tigers also finished among the top five in the epee, as freshman Kat Holmes and junior Phoebe Caldwell took third and fifth, respectively.

Senior foilist Alexander Mills and sophomore saberist Philip Dershwitz each took silver medals in their respective events. Sophomore saberist Diamond Wheeler was Princeton’s top women’s saberist, finishing fifth.

The men’s and women’s squads will compete together at the NCAA Championships two weeks from now in Columbus, Ohio.
