Byrne’s book consists of three parts: “How We Got Here,” “Where We Are Now” and a prescriptive section called “Solutions.” One of the proposals in the book’s last section, according to Byrne, recommends that universities remove their endowments from several major banks involved in the financial crisis, including Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and Bank of America.
Other entries in the book, guest-edited by Krugman’s wife, Robin Wells, call for a large-scale restructuring of capitalism and a higher marginal tax on the wealthy. Janet Byrne has written for The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, and is the author of “A Genius for Living: The Life of Frieda Lawrence.”
