While other candidates from other countries have been nominated, Kim is considered the frontrunner according to The New York Times as the position has historically gone to a U.S. nominee. An expert in global health, Kim is known for his leadership role with the organization Partners in Health. In the mid-1990s he worked in Peru to develop a treatment program for multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis.
The first Asian-American to serve as president of an Ivy League school, Kim assumed the Dartmouth presidency in 2009. As president, Kim led a collaborative of universities to address high-risk drinking on college campuses.
