News & Notes: Constraints on social media prevent accurate U. history timeline

According to its new Facebook Timeline, the University, which was founded in 1746, was actually founded on July 1, 1800. University Social Media Strategist Ian Cahir said in a tweet that the new Facebook Timeline prevents the University from accurately registering when it was founded.

“Interesting issue with brand pages. I’m doing the history for @Princeton, and FB’s timeline ends at 1800. We go back to 1746 #oops,” he tweeted.

He also noted in a later tweet that status updates and photos can only go as far back as 1905. Cahir tweeted that, as a result, the University would have to register them as milestones.

Mashable, a technology website, reported the tweet on Thursday. The article also noted that the U.S. Army and Navy, which were founded in 1775, have encountered similar problems.

After being contacted by a reporter for The Daily Princetonian, Cahir tweeted once more.

“After being on Twitter for three years without anyone caring, now people seem to care about what I tweet. Interesting and a bit surreal.”
