Sports Shorts: Spikers earn EIVA split

The Tigers (2-3 overall, 1-1 EIVA) are tied for third place in the eight-team league, matching the Crimson (6-1, 1-1) and a half-game ahead of Sacred Heart (1-2, 4-7). Princeton still has 12 matches left to play in the EIVA, which No. 5 Penn State and St. Francis lead together at 2-0.

Facing Sacred Heart on Friday, Princeton got ahead quickly, taking early leads in the first two sets and winning each 25-20. The Tigers closed out the match with a 25-21 third game. Freshman outside hitter Cody Kessel continued his strong start to college play, leading the team with 13 kills and hitting .462, while junior middle blocker Michael Dye added seven blocks and 10 kills with a .615 attack percentage.

The following day, the Tigers lost by the same score, dropping the first two sets by two points and falling 25-20 in the third. Kessel topped the visitors again with 11 kills, while freshman Will Sirosky hit .571 with 10 kills.

Sophomore outside hitter Jeff Stapleton, the Tigers’ leading attacker last season, missed most of both games due to injury, taking only one hitting chance over the weekend.

Princeton plays three more games on the road over the next two weeks before returning to Dillon Gymnasium for a long homestand.
