News & Notes: Dean of the Faculty Dobkin celebrates Sweet 16

But for Dobkin, the news isn’t entirely bad. He will get a discount of another kind.

“This is the year I switch,” Dobkin said in an email. “I used to be able to get juvenile tickets because I was under 16. Now I get senior tickets because I’m 64.”

Dobkin, who celebrated his leap-year birthday yesterday, took the day off from work and set up an automated email reply message tailored specifically to the rare and special day.

“I will be away from email for the day because it only happens every four years,” Dobkin’s automated reply read. “I’ll respond to your email on my return.”

Dobkin said in the later email that he was hoping to celebrate by going to the beach, but the cold and rainy weather relegated him to the art museum instead.

“Nature didn’t cooperate. So I found myself looking at Van Goghs. Not a bad way to age,” he said.

As he gets older, Dobkin said that having a birthday once every 1,461 days rather than once every 365 days has its benefits.

“At my age, the fewer times I have to up the counter the better,” Dobkin said. “So this is good.”
