Sports Shorts: Fitzpatrick inducted into USTFCCCA Hall of Fame

Viewed as a pioneer of intercollegiate athletics, Fitzpatrick worked at Yale and Michigan for a combined two decades before moving to Princeton. A professional sprinter with the Natick Hook and Ladder Company in the 1880s, Fitzpatrick is credited with the creation of modern pole-vaulting form, encouraging jumpers to move their hands together when taking off. In an editorial published on Nov. 20, 1911, The Daily Princetonian called Fitzpatrick “the best trainer that Princeton teams have ever had” for his work with the baseball, football and track teams in his first year.

He was inducted into the Hall by Peter Farrell, the current head coach of the women’s cross country and track and field teams.
