News & Notes: Geosciences professor Ward given Procter & Gamble Award

The award, given by the American Society of Microbiology, recognizes “distinguished achievement in research and development in applied and environmental microbiology,” according to the ASM website.

The winner of the award receives a cash prize of $2,000 and travels to the ASM General Meeting where the winner has the opportunity to deliver the Procter & Gamble Award Lecture.

Ward focuses her studies on the nitrogen cycle, microbial ecology and phytoplankton communities, according to the department website. The lecture she is planning on giving at the ASM conference is currently titled “Biogeochemical Cycling: Past, Present and Future.”

Ward is the William J. Sinclair Professor of Geosciences, has been a member of the geosciences department since 1998 and the chair since 2006.

The prize has been awarded since 1977 and is sponsored by The Procter & Gamble Company.
