News & Notes: Borough Police crack down on drunk driving

During the holiday season, according to numbers reported by Clifton Police’s traffic division, citations for driving under the influence normally increase by nearly 10 percent.

The program, started in 1999, was founded by the Elliot family of New Jersey after their son John died in a head-on collision with a drunk driver. Under the program, drivers are asked to sign the “Ensign John R. Elliot HEROCampaign for Designated Drivers” pledge, which asks drivers to drive sober, stop friends from driving while drunk and be a designated driver.

The program also recommends that pedestrians who are inebriated take a taxi or contact a sober friend rather than try to drive home themselves.

According to Princeton Patch, 168 people were killed as a result of alcohol-related crashes in 2010 in New Jersey, which constitutes 30 percent of traffic-related fatalities.
