Animal rights organizations from New Jersey and Philadelphia organized protests at the intersection of Nassau Street and Washington Road Friday afternoon to protest new allegations of animal deaths at the University.
Four protestors kicked off the demonstration at 12:30 p.m.
Animal activist group Stop Animal Exploitation Now! accused the University last Thursday of staff negligence that led to the death of at least 10 laboratory rats.
An account by an anonymous former laboratory employee stated that the rats were deprived of food and water for as much as a week, possibly because of a miscommunication between the animal and research staffs.
According to the allegation, two of the animals starved to death, while the remaining ones were euthanized.
University spokesman Martin Mbugua told NJ.com that the University is taking these reports of animal abuse seriously.
“We sustain commitment to strong oversight of animal research through an approach of continuous review of Princeton’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee,” he said.
