Only the top four teams in the league are given a bid to the Ivy League tournament, and the team in first place hosts the tournament. Even though Penn shares the top spot with Dartmouth, the Quakers’ win against the Big Green earlier this season clinched them the first seed and home-field advantage.
Princeton and Penn have already met this season, which resulted in a momentous victory for the Tigers. No Ivy League team had beaten the Quakers in four years until the Tigers earned an 11-7 victory at Penn’s Franklin Field.
In the game, the Tigers showed a balanced offensive attack, with six different players scoring goals and three getting assists. Senior attacker Lizzy Drumm and junior midfielder Cassie Pyle both had hat tricks; sophomore midfielder Charlotte Davis scored two goals; and sophomore attacker Jaci Gassaway, sophomore midfielder Caroline Rehfuss and senior attack Maisie Devine each added one.
“The team is excited about our game against Penn,” Drumm said. “We are definitely entering the game knowing we can defeat a solid Penn team, but we also know that they will be looking for payback after their loss to us just a few weeks ago.”
In addition to the seedings for the tournament, the all-Ivy League honors were also announced this week. Five Tigers were selected for all-Ivy teams. Drumm was one of four unanimous first-team selections in the whole league. She has played in 66 games over her Princeton career, appearing in every game since her freshman year. Drumm leads the Princeton team in goals, with 39, and overall points, with 42. Her 39-goal total also puts her in second place for goals in the league.
“It is an honor to be a unanimous first team all-Ivy selection, particularly in my senior year,” Drumm said.
Junior defender Lindsey deButts joins Drumm on the first team. DeButts leads the Tigers in both ground balls and forced turnovers; for the whole league she is third in ground balls and second in turnovers.
After being named Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week for the last two weeks of the season, Pyle was selected for the second team all-Ivy. Her 42 points on the season from 30 goals and 12 assists puts her in a tie with Drumm for most points for the Tigers. Pyle is also tied for fourth place in the Ivy League for assists.
Two Tigers also made honorable mention, including senior goalie Erin Tochihara and Gassaway.
The Quakers had one player as a unanimous first team all-Ivy selection in attacker Erin Brennan, three on the second team and two honorable mentions.
Princeton will take on Penn at 7 p.m. on Franklin Field this Friday. The Tigers are expecting a “good, aggressive game,” deButts said.
“The game on Friday is going to be a battle,” Drumm said. “We are both teams that fight to the finish, so I think it’s going to be a high-intensity game.”
