Best of On Tap: Spring 2011

Feb. 2, sophomore swimmer Kila Pickering:

Q: What is the best part about being an athlete on campus?

A: Definitely all the girls who are after your hot swimming body to breed hot swimming water babies.

Feb. 9, freshman 174-pounder Ryan Callahan:

Q: Who is your quirkiest teammate on the wrestling team, and why?

A: Freshman 149-pounder Bobby Shepherd. The kid knows a fun fact about everything. He tried telling me that Jadwin Gymnasium’s ceiling is rounded because it makes the athletes inside tired while competing, and since they are tired, they will never fight the opposing team. I called shenanigans immediately.

March 9, senior heavyweight rower Alex Cantwell:

Q: Do you or your team have any odd rituals?

A: No. If you’ve ever seen a group of grown men wearing Daisy Dukes, that’s not us.

March 23, senior golfer Kate Scarpetta:

Q: What was your “welcome to college” moment?

A: Freshman fall, senior Maggie Boberg, senior Rachel Blum and I were assigned a recruit to coddle. I organized a canoeing trip on Lake Carnegie. Rachel and the recruit’s vessel flipped after Maggie and I accidently T-boned them with our boat, in the middle of the lake. Coach never asked me to entertain any other recruits after this incident.

March 30, sophomore tennis player Matija Pecotic:

Q: What do you do for fun in Malta?

A: SPEAR. GIANT. TUNA.

April 7, sophomore middle blocker Michael Dye:

Q: What is the worst part about playing volleyball on campus?

A: Probably having to explain the fact that we do not wear spandex like the girls do.

April 13, junior center defender Kaitlin Poladian:

Q: Considering that you are from California, was Princeton the first time you saw snow?

A: Yes! I was screaming and running around in my rainbow flip-flops the first day it snowed freshman year. I also thought it was little white flowers blowing in the wind, and then I realized it was snow. It was so exciting. I never had seen snow fall out of the sky.

April 20, sophomore outfielder John Mishu:

Q: What is the greatest highlight of your sports career?

A: Definitely senior pitcher David Palms’ striking out the last batter on a 3-2 pitch about eight inches low and inside with two outs, bases loaded, bottom of the ninth in front of 6,000 fans at Louisiana State University.

April 27, senior midfielder Tyler Moni:

Q: Which player has the sweetest flow on the lacrosse team? Does this person put his flow to good use?

A: Sophomore midfielder Tucker Shanley without a doubt. It has been recently trimmed but that buttery lechuga had a DFR of 10.5 while it lasted ... brah.

Feb. 23, sophomore mid-distance runner Peter Callahan:

Q: What was your “welcome to college” moment?

A: The first full day of preseason my freshman year, the entire team had to do the “five-minute test.” Here, everyone gets on the track and runs as many consecutive five-minute miles as possible. I had never been in a group of so many talented runners, and it was a truly humbling experience. Afterwards, the deceptively strong then-junior Kyle Soloff slammed me into a locker and said, “Welcome to college, bitch!”

May 4, sophomore mid-distance runner Alexis Mikaelian:

Q: What was your “welcome to college” moment?

A: The first weekend of preseason my freshman year, we went to Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. They had all these steps set up to prevent landslides, and I ate it twice tripping over the steps. Upon returning to campus, the deceptively strong then-junior Sarah Cummings threw me into a locker and said, “Welcome to college, bitch.”
