Respecting Pride Week
Regarding: “Clubs stand up to LGBT discrimination” (Monday, April 11, 2011):
As leaders in our eating clubs, we are enthusiastic about the opportunity to celebrate the diversity of our membership and guests, and we would like to take this Pride Week to recommit and reaffirm our constant goal of ensuring that people of all backgrounds, experiences and orientations have a safe and fun outlet in all of the eating clubs. This Pride Week, we want to share our commitment to acknowledge and address the challenges facing lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) students.
The Street is supposed to be a fun and inviting setting, and it is important to us that everyone — regardless of sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, race, creed or ethnicity — can experience it that way. We want to take advantage of this week to offer a few reminders about our collective charge to treat all members of our community with respect and dignity.
We strive to make our clubs’ environments safe and welcoming to everyone, as a model of a safe and accepting community. All 10 clubs have policies in place that protect students from discrimination and harassment. We have reminded our club members, officers and security personnel that any behavior seen as discriminatory, derogatory, harassing or threatening will not be tolerated at our clubs, and we promise to respond swiftly to any issues that occur.
We are well aware that the actions of a few individuals can cause recourse through an entire community, and that, sadly, very real prejudices and misconceptions still exist in our world. With regards to the LGBTQ community, the eating clubs represented here endeavor to be part of the solution. This is a pledge from the 10 club presidents listed below that we will act against discriminatory or harassing behavior when we see it, and as representatives of our clubs, we will make ourselves available to deal with situations that are brought to our attention.
As eating club presidents, we take seriously the safety and comfort of everyone who enters our club. We are committed to an open and ongoing dialogue that allows problems to be communicated and resolved for the benefit of the entire University community. In support of the LGBTQ community, we celebrate our diversity and stand together to protect and ensure the safe and accepting community that all of us are entitled to enjoy. We invite you to join us.
