The USG is currently trying to improve upon summer storage options through an initiative to provide long-distance American students with the same summer storage space as international students. While we commend the USG’s work, and think that priority should certainly be given to international and other “long distance” students, we believe that free storage should be offered to all of Princeton’s student body.
The vast majority of students at Princeton have furniture in their rooms that they need to either store or take home over the summer. The latter option is entirely unrealistic for students required to board planes to return home. Furthermore, even for students who are only a car ride away, moving, say, a couch is no easy task. Currently, these students must rent storage from the university or from a private agency at an exorbitant cost. Indeed, some students report that the cost of storing items like refrigerators is often higher than the initial cost of the appliance. While the University offers a slightly cheaper alternative to outside rental agencies, storage is still pricey, and the initial amount that a student must pay does not cover insurance. Further, the University does not cover the cost of storage for students on financial aid.
Princeton used to offer free storage to all students, but in 2007, the University halted the policy because various construction projects occurring on campus — in particular, the construction of new Butler and renovations in Forbes — limited available space. Four years later, now that many of these projects have been completed, it is time to return to offering storage to all students. While various programs do take place on campus over the summer, campus is still fairly empty, and the University should be able to find the room to store students’ possessions. In fact, other universities that have a comparable or higher level of summer activity are able to provide storage for all students — Yale, for example, provides free storage to its undergraduate population in its entirety. It would be very convenient for students to have at least some free storage on campus over the summer, and the University should begin providing it.
