Women's Lacrosse: Top-10 foes drop Princeton in Va.

The No. 11 Tigers dominated Brown (5-2 overall, 0-1 Ivy League) from the opening whistle for a 17-5 victory at Princeton Stadium. But Princeton (3-3, 1-0) lost both legs of a trip to the state of Virginia, falling 10-5 to No. 9 James Madison University (6-1) and suffering a 10-9 defeat at No. 10 Virginia (5-3).

They now have a chance to regroup this week with two games at Princeton Stadium, where the Tigers are 2-0 this season.

Princeton entered the weekend with 20 consecutive wins over Brown, and this year’s game became the latest in a series of very lopsided victories. The Tigers led 10-0 at halftime, as senior goalie Erin Tochihara saved all five of the Bears’ first-period attempts. Princeton’s pressure frustrated its less-talented opponents, who were successful in only four of nine clear attempts in the half.

Senior attack Lizzy Drumm and junior attack Barb Previ each notched a hat trick in the rout, while sophomore attack Jaci Gassaway added a pair of goals and two assists. Tochihara allowed five goals after halftime but notched seven total saves.

The Tigers faced a much tougher opponent on Wednesday, as James Madison entered the game with a perfect 5-0 record. Junior midfielder Cassie Pyle answered a goal by the hosts with an unassisted strike of her own, but the Dukes soon took control. Four consecutive shots zipped past Tochihara into the net, and another goal minutes later capped a 5-0 James Madison run that opened up the game.

Princeton trailed by as many as seven goals before scores by Gassaway and Drumm cut the final margin to 10-5.

James Madison attack Casey Ancarrow notched a hat trick, scoring all three of her goals in the final 10 minutes of the first half. Drumm led the Tigers in scoring for the third straight game with a pair of goals, extending her season total to a team-high 13.

Goalie Alex Menghetti blocked eight of Princeton’s 13 shots on goal.

After one blowout victory and one decisive loss, the final game of the week came down to the wire. Virginia downed the Tigers 14-7 at Princeton Stadium last season and was on track to do the same on Saturday, jumping out to a 6-2 lead in Charlottesville, Va.

But the Tigers scored three times in the final six minutes of the first half. Senior attack Maisie Devine, sophomore midfielder Caroline Rehfuss and sophomore attack Sam Ellis each found the net for goals, the first and last of which were assisted by Gassaway, cutting the Cavaliers’ lead to one heading into halftime.

Virginia attack Julie Gardner tallied a hat trick in the second half, the last of which put the hosts ahead 10-7, but the Tigers stayed in the game. Tochihara saved two shots and a third hit the post in the final 16 minutes, in which Princeton held its opponent scoreless. Meanwhile, senior defender Caroline Markowitz scored and Previ converted a free position shot with three minutes, 13 seconds left, bringing the Tigers within one goal.

The Cavaliers did not let Princeton take another shot, however, forcing two turnovers and running out the clock for a 10-9 victory.
