Squash: Hoping to rebound from first losses of season, Tigers shift focus to immediate opponents in Jadwin

Coming off a slightly disappointing weekend, the women fell against their Ivy opponents, Penn and Yale, in hard-fought matches. The No. 4 Tigers (6-2 overall, 3-2 Ivy League) clinched a lead after the first session with the help of senior co-captain Jackie Moss, freshman Alex Sawin, sophomore Casey Cortes as well as a second-session victory by freshman Caroline Feeley. Unfortunately for Princeton, the Quakers began a strong comeback starting with a win by Yarden Odinak, and the No. 5 Quakers (6-2, 3-1) ultimately defeated the Tigers 5-4.

The women then traveled to New Haven to face No. 2 Yale (12-0, 4-0), but despite the victories by Moss and senior co-captain Nikki Sequeira, the Tigers were unable to hold off the Bulldogs. Despite the loss, head coach Gail Ramsay was proud of the team’s effort and performance, especially that of the new freshman class. Sawin, one of the four freshmen that competed against Yale, had a gutsy early effort, which showed that the freshmen are still gaining valuable experience and have a lot of potential to grow in the future.

“I think [this past weekend] was a good eye-opener for us to see the high level we have to compete at in order to have a shot at [the] Howe Cup,” Moss said. “We made it our goal at the beginning of the year to win the national championships, and I think that now that the waters have been tested a little bit, we’re starting to believe we have what it takes to make it to [the] Howe Cup.”

The men were equally challenged by Yale last weekend. After their 9-0 sweep against Penn at home, the No. 3 Tigers (6-1, 3-1) traveled to New Haven to face off against the No. 2 Bulldogs. Despite the wins by sophomore Todd Harrity, senior David Letourneau, junior Kelly Shannon and junior David Pena, Yale’s Naishadh Lalwani ultimately won the final thrilling match against Princeton senior co-captain Peter Sopher. Despite the loss, the team remains optimistic about the remainder of the season, head coach Bob Callahan explained.

“We’re going to get better from this,” Callahan said. “We’ll be better next week, and the week after and then into Nationals.”

The Tigers’ ultimate goal will be to win Nationals at the end of February. With so many teams close to the title, the Tigers said they appreciate the close matches as a way to practice their strategies.

“A big part of competing well is having match play experience,” Letourneau said. “This weekend is another opportunity for us, and I certainly believe that we will get better with every match we play.”

The women’s team will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Friday in Jadwin Gymnasium against Stanford, and the men will face Dartmouth at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
