Editorial: Nationalizing the motto

If passed, the Serve America Act would bring enormous benefits to both the nation generally and to Princeton in particular. On a basic level, the creation of such programs will greatly increase the number of students and young people interested in and able to engage in national service programs, which in itself is a tremendous boon. Moreover, this bill helps to achieve one of the University’s most central missions: the broadening of access to higher education.

Within our own University community, the tremendous and unmet demand for positions in programs like Teach For America and Scholars in the Nations Service suggests that many Princetonians seek opportunities to intensively serve their nation. The creation of these new programs would provide them with additional and excellent opportunities to do so. As such, we believe Princeton should use its influence in Washington and nationwide to support this act. Given the University’s existing lobbying group on Capitol Hill as well as its influence as a key national institution, Princeton’s support could be crucial in ensuring the passage of this legislation.

Beyond simply supporting this bill, however, it is also crucial that Princeton position itself to be named one of the 30 universities eligible for public service funds on campus. By providing additional funding and focus to public service careers, such a program could help Princeton promote public service more persuasively than it has in the past. Given the crises and opportunities facing our nation, now is the time for Princeton to heed the call and rally for a new commitment to service.
