Despite the University ranking in the top quarter of schools surveyed, 90 percent of Princeton students polled said they thought that UHS needs improvement, much greater than other top-quartile schools. How could this be so?
Some areas immediately identifiable for enhancement are the UHS' hours of service and availability of anonymous advice. Princeton received a "C" for hours of operation. UHS is open Monday-Friday from 8:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., the period of the day when students and other members of the University community are least likely to have free time. UHS should consider extending its operation a few hours each day, shifting the hours of operation so that the UHS can be open later or staying open on weekends, when most students have more free time. UHS could also make its service more accessible by increasing the frequency and length of drop-in times.
Princeton also received a C for its anonymous advice forums. While Sexual Health Advisors and other outreach programs at UHS are theoretically confidential, many students probably still feel uncomfortable speaking face-to-face about certain issues. UHS should consider establishing an online forum where students can seek truly confidential advice from UHS staff.
Princeton is rarely satisfied with being ranked sixth in the Ivy League or merely in the top quartile of all colleges on a survey. While the validity of these types of rankings should be judged skeptically, UHS would do well to study these results and consider additional ways to make its services more accessible and useful to students.
