This past Saturday, the Big Red Pep Band failed to respect introductions of the five Princeton seniors during their senior night ceremony prior to the start of the contest. The band opted to proceed with the Cornell tradition of rattling newspapers and yelling "boring" during the team introductions. In doing this, we acted unprofessionally and effectively encouraged a large contingent of Cornell fans to act similarly. As the band's manager, I failed in my job of ensuring the band respected the Princeton senior night ceremony. We should not have chanted over the ceremony and in doing so, embarrassed the Cornell University athletics community.
We especially offer our apologies to the senior members of the Princeton hockey team: Kyle, Mike, Erik, Keith and Landis. This was their night, and we had no right to infringe upon that. After four years of dedication to the Princeton hockey program, these guys deserved to be honored properly.
As representatives of Cornell University, the Big Red Pep Band failed to uphold the standards and ideals of Cornell. As guests of Princeton University, we acted in a manner that reflected poorly on our school. We deeply regret the actions we took and are embarrassed with how we represented ourselves and our university. We take pride in being respectful to the other universities in the Ivy League and ECAC Hockey and in having respect and understanding for the sports we attend. We assure you that we will act appropriately in future visits.
